IG Douglas Kanja Outlines Measures To Tackle Corruption Among Traffic Police Officers
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has outlined measures to tackle corruption among traffic police officers, with a focus on curbing bribery on Kenyan roads.
Speaking during a recent address, Kanja said the National Police Service is committed to restoring public trust and ending the rampant corruption that has for years tainted the traffic department. The efforts include closer monitoring of officers, digitisation of traffic fines and holding commanders accountable for misconduct within their units.
Kanja noted that complaints from motorists about extortion and bribery on highways have been on the rise, with many Kenyans sharing videos of officers soliciting bribes. He said such behaviour will no longer be tolerated.
Among the key measures announced is the digitisation of traffic fines. The IG said the service is moving away from cash payments to a digital system where fines will be paid via eCitizen or other approved platforms. This, he said, will reduce physical interaction between officers and motorists and seal loopholes for bribery.
The IG also announced enhanced monitoring of traffic officers through body cameras, CCTV surveillance, and impromptu checks by senior officers and the Internal Affairs Unit. Officers found engaging in corruption will face disciplinary action, including dismissal and prosecution.
In addition, Kanja said commanders will be held accountable for the conduct of their juniors. He explained that if officers under a particular commander are found to be corrupt, the commander will also be held responsible for failing to supervise them.
The police boss urged members of the public to report corrupt officers through the available hotlines and the newly established digital reporting platforms.
Kenyans have welcomed the measures but said implementation will be key. Many said similar promises have been made before without much change on the ground.
The National Police Service says it is determined to clean up the traffic department and ensure professionalism on Kenyan roads.
