“I Didn’t Know I Was Being Recorded” – Methu Responds After Shirtless Rally Video Sparks Mixed
Nyandarua Senator John Methu has broken his silence after a video showing him removing his T-shirt during a political rally in Kiambu County went viral, sparking mixed reactions among Kenyans on social media.
The incident occurred in Komaiko, where the outspoken senator was addressing supporters while standing atop a campaign vehicle. During the rally, a supporter reportedly called out, asking him to hand over his T-shirt.
Methu obliged, removing the shirt and giving it to the supporter before putting on another one he had ready. However, the seemingly ordinary exchange soon attracted widespread attention after a video of the moment circulated online.
The footage triggered different reactions, with some Kenyans finding the incident amusing while others questioned the senator’s decision to remove his shirt in public.
Speaking during an interview with a local media station on Sunday, October 11, 2026, Methu explained that he had not realised anyone was recording him when the incident happened.
“Somebody just asked for my shirt. I removed it and gave it to the person, and I wore another one. What is the fuss about it?” he posed.
The senator maintained that he had simply responded to a supporter who repeatedly requested the T-shirt, adding that he had another one available to wear.
“I didn’t know somebody was taking a video, by the way. I just thought she really asked for it. She kept saying, ‘Give me this T-shirt, give me this T-shirt.’ I said I have another one. I just removed this one, gave it to her and put another one,” Methu explained.
To further justify his actions, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) designated secretary-general compared the moment to celebrations commonly witnessed in football matches.
He noted that players sometimes remove their shirts and raise them in celebration after scoring a goal, suggesting that his actions at the rally were similarly spontaneous.
According to Methu, the rally had been successful, and he saw no reason to turn the exchange into a major controversy.
The incident has once again highlighted how quickly moments captured during political campaigns can spread online, drawing public attention beyond the original event.
