Why Emergency Teams Sprayed Water on the Crashed Helicopter in Kericho

A Kenya Forest Service helicopter carrying five people, including Environment Principal Secretary Festus Ng’eno, crashed during take-off at Kericho Golf Club on Monday, 12 October. All five occupants survived and were rushed to hospital in stable condition.

Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Samwel Ndanyi confirmed that the aircraft, registration number 5Y-FSK, had five people on board and that no deaths were reported.

Images of emergency responders spraying water on the wreckage have since drawn attention and raised questions about the response. Aviation safety practices offer several possible explanations.

First, helicopters carry aviation fuel, which can ignite if it meets a spark or heat source. A crash can damage fuel lines and cause leaks, so responders may use water or firefighting foam to reduce the risk of fire.

Second, engines and other mechanical parts can stay extremely hot after operation. Residual heat becomes dangerous if flammable materials or leaking fuel are nearby, so cooling may be necessary.

Third, a damaged helicopter poses hazards such as leaking fuel, sharp metal and hot components. Managing these risks creates safer conditions for rescuers to reach survivors and evacuate them.

Fourth, fuel vapours can catch fire under certain conditions. Firefighters therefore check the wreckage and surrounding area for signs of leakage and other dangers.

Finally, once everyone has been rescued and immediate threats are handled, authorities can secure the site. Investigators will then document the wreckage, assess the aircraft and work to establish what led to the crash.

It is important to note that the exact reason water was used at Kericho Golf Club has not been independently confirmed. It would be premature to say responders were specifically cooling the wreckage or suppressing a fuel fire without a statement from the emergency teams themselves.

The crash has raised questions about what happened during take-off and what measures were taken to protect those on board. Investigations are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
