Gachagua Ally Finally Reveals What Prompted Him to Remove His Shirt at a Public Event

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has explained the circumstances that led him to remove his T-shirt during a political rally in Kiambu County, an incident that quickly attracted attention after a video of the moment circulated on social media.

The outspoken politician found himself at the centre of online discussions following the incident in Komaiko, where he had joined other leaders and supporters for a political gathering.

While standing on top of a campaign vehicle, Methu was approached by a supporter who reportedly asked him to give her the T-shirt he was wearing. Rather than ignore the request, the senator removed it, handed it over and immediately put on another shirt he had carried.

What appeared to be a brief interaction soon became a talking point after the footage spread online, prompting different reactions from Kenyans.

Some social media users treated the incident as an amusing moment from a political rally, while others questioned why the senator had chosen to remove his shirt in public.

However, Methu has maintained that there was nothing unusual about his actions, explaining that he was simply responding to a supporter who wanted his T-shirt.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, October 11, 2026, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) designated secretary-general said he had not even realised that someone was recording the exchange.

“Somebody just asked for my shirt. I removed it and gave it to the person, and I wore another one. What is the fuss about it?” Methu stated.

He further explained that the woman had repeatedly requested the shirt, and since he had another one available, he decided to hand it over.

The senator also compared the incident to celebrations in football, where players sometimes remove their shirts after scoring goals. He suggested that the rally had gone well and that his actions were spontaneous rather than a carefully planned spectacle.

The episode highlights the growing influence of social media in shaping public conversations around political leaders. A brief interaction at a campaign event can quickly reach thousands of viewers, often attracting interpretations beyond what happened at the scene.

For Methu, however, the explanation was simple: a supporter wanted his T-shirt, he had another one to wear, and he saw no reason to refuse the request.
