Bad News for Babu Owino as Matiang’i Reveals the Person He Is Willing to Support for Nairobi Governor

Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i has raised concerns over the conduct of some Nairobi politicians, accusing unnamed leaders of using goons to intimidate opponents and disrupt political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Matiang’i made the remarks after attending a Sunday church service at Jesus Is Alive Ministries, associated with Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.

The former Interior Cabinet Secretary criticised politicians who allegedly deploy groups of individuals to cause chaos during political rallies and interfere with church services.

He warned that such behaviour threatens peaceful political engagement and undermines the democratic principles that should guide the country as leaders prepare for the next general election.

Matiang’i’s remarks come amid growing political competition in Nairobi, where several leaders are expected to battle for influential positions in 2027.

Bishop Wanjiru recently announced her intention to vie for the Nairobi governorship through her Kenya Moja Movement Party, adding another contender to the race for the county’s top seat.

Her entry into the contest comes as political parties and individual candidates begin positioning themselves to attract voters in the capital.

Nairobi remains a significant political battleground because of its large population, economic influence and diverse voting blocs. The governor’s position also attracts considerable interest because of the county’s responsibilities in providing essential services and managing urban development.

Matiang’i’s attendance at Wanjiru’s church service has drawn attention amid speculation about political alliances and possible support for candidates seeking elective positions in the capital.

However, his criticism of politicians allegedly using goons did not identify the individuals responsible, and the accusations would require further evidence to establish the claims.

The former Cabinet Secretary has increasingly featured in political discussions as opposition leaders consider strategies for challenging President William Ruto’s administration in 2027.

With the election approaching, questions surrounding political violence, peaceful campaigns and candidate alliances are expected to remain prominent.

Nairobi voters will be watching closely as potential candidates outline their plans and seek support ahead of the contest.
