Tchouameni questions refereeing decisions after Real Madrid’s 1-0 Villarreal
According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday October 11, 2026, Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has questioned the refereeing decisions following his team’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday, expressing his confusion over the red card shown to teammate Vinicius Junior.
Real Madrid secured all three points at the Santiago Bernabeu, but the match was overshadowed by Vinicius’ dismissal following an incident involving Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba.
The Brazilian winger was penalised for pulling his opponent’s hair, with the referee subsequently showing him a straight red card. A goal scored by Vinicius was also ruled out following the incident, preventing Real Madrid from extending their advantage to 2-0.
Reacting to the decision, Tchouameni openly questioned the referee’s judgement during an interview with Real Madrid TV.
“I do not understand what is happening with the referees. I do not understand that red card,” the French midfielder said.
His comments reflect the frustration within the Real Madrid camp following the controversial incident, which has added to the growing debate about refereeing decisions in Spanish football.
Despite his dissatisfaction with the officiating, Tchouameni was pleased that Real Madrid managed to secure the victory against a Villarreal side he described as a strong opponent.
“I’m happy with the victory because we know Villarreal is a great team. We can certainly improve, but after a three-week international break, it’s not easy. Today, the most important thing is the win,” he explained.
The midfielder also acknowledged the importance of the home supporters, insisting that their backing makes a significant difference to the team’s performances at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“I’m sure it’s easier to win the game with the support of the stadium. It’s our home and we have to keep winning here,” Tchouameni added.
Real Madrid have maintained their unbeaten home record this season, and the French international stressed that the team must continue building on its positive results.
“It’s very important to get a win and we have to keep going like this. We’ve done it and we’re going to look ahead,” he said.
The controversy surrounding Vinicius’ dismissal comes at a time when Real Madrid’s relationship with Spain’s refereeing authorities remains strained. The club has repeatedly questioned decisions made during its matches, with the latest incident against Villarreal providing another talking point.
Vinicius’ potential suspension could also create a selection headache for the coaching staff as Real Madrid prepare for their upcoming fixtures. The Brazilian is an important attacking player, and his possible absence could force the team to adjust its plans.
However, Real Madrid must now turn their attention to their next challenge, with a Champions League encounter against AS Roma awaiting them.
Tchouameni emphasised that the team must maintain its strong start in Europe and travel to Rome with the intention of securing another victory.
“We have started in the best possible way in the Champions League and we have to go to Rome to win the game,” he declared.
The Villarreal match was also a special occasion for the midfielder, who made his 200th appearance for Real Madrid.
