NNPC is Not Producing Any Fuel; The Price They Are Reducing is the Price of Imported Fuel- Okonkwo
Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, has accused the Federal Government of attempting to reintroduce what he described as a corrupt fuel subsidy system through its proposed intervention to reduce petrol prices.
Okonkwo made the allegation during an interview on Channels Television’s Inside Sources on Sunday, October 11, 2026, while discussing the government’s plan to cap petrol prices and provide temporary relief to consumers.
He argued that the government’s proposed price reduction amounted to a return to the controversial import-dependent subsidy arrangement, insisting that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) was not purchasing refined petroleum products from the Dangote Refinery.
“NNPC is not producing a single litre of refined fuel in Nigeria. So the price they are reducing is the price of imported fuel by NNPC, because NNPC is not taking from Dangote at all,” Okonkwo said.
He alleged that the government’s intervention was an attempt to revive the subsidy arrangement that had previously been associated with widespread corruption in the petroleum sector.
According to him, subsidising imported fuel would continue to benefit foreign refineries, shipping operators and other participants in the international petroleum supply chain rather than prioritising domestic refining and production.
Okonkwo contrasted the government’s approach with Atiku Abubakar’s proposed strategy, which he said would focus on supplying crude oil to the Dangote Refinery and other local refineries at affordable prices to reduce production costs and make petrol more accessible to Nigerians.
He maintained that supporting domestic refining would reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and limit the opportunities for corruption associated with the previous subsidy system.
