Raila Odinga’s Former Bodyguard Ogeta Recounts What Raila Said Before He Collapsed in India

Raila Odinga’s former bodyguard Maurice Ogeta has recounted the last moments before the death of the former Prime Minister of Kenya.

Speaking on, October 9, 2026, during an interview with Citizen TV Kenya, Ogeta gave an emotional account of what happened in India where Raila died.

Ogeta said Raila was taking a walk when he suddenly stopped and stared at something in the air.

“He went a quarter way then he stopped. I was behind him. He said Eey, then stared at something in the air. I asked him if his back was hurting. He didn’t respond. He then said Eey, then I realized something was wrong,” Maurice Ogeta said.

Ogeta, who served Raila for many years and was part of his close security detail, said he immediately sensed something was wrong when Raila failed to respond to his question about his back.

The former ODM leader, Raila Amolo Odinga, died on October 15, 2025, in India where he had travelled for treatment.

He collapsed while on a morning walk at an Ayurvedic hospital in Kerala. His death shocked the nation and triggered national mourning.

During the interview, Ogeta also revealed that the late former Prime Minister survived several assassination attempts during his long political career.

He said that in 2023, Raila escaped death narrowly during the height of Azimio anti-government protests, when his convoy was allegedly targeted.

Ogeta described Raila as a fearless leader who never allowed security threats to stop his quest for justice and democracy, and said his presence kept the team alert at all times.
