Former Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) moderator David Githii has announced plans to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election as an independent candidate.

Speaking during a press briefing in Kiambu County, Githii said he would not align with any political camp, noting that he would conduct his campaign separately.

He further criticised the current administration, accusing it of failing to adequately address the welfare of Kenyans.

He said his presidential bid would focus on fighting corruption, improving healthcare and strengthening the education sector.

“I will vie as an independent candidate, and I will fight corruption and improve the healthcare of the country,” he said.

Githii said Kenya needed a neutral leader who would prioritise citizens’ interests rather than advance the agenda of political factions.

He maintained that his decision to run independently was intended to give him the freedom to pursue his agenda without being controlled by established political groups.

Githii said his agenda would also include addressing challenges facing the education sector, although he did not provide detailed policy proposals during the briefing.

His announcement adds another prospective contender to the growing field of politicians and independent candidates seeking the presidency ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Githii also appealed to Kenyans to maintain peace and unity as the country approaches the next election.

“I will reach out to Kenyans, and I would also request Kenyans to maintain peace and order,” he said.

He said he intended to engage citizens across the country as he sought support for his presidential ambition, insisting that national unity should remain a priority during the election period.
