Bad News to Kalonzo as New Signs Show How Gachagua and Sifuna Have Started Sidelining Him and Why
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka risks being isolated by fellow opposition leaders as he pushes to transform the Azimio la Umoja coalition into The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo has spearheaded efforts to restructure the coalition following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. However, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Linda Mwananchi, associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, have expressed reservations about joining TUA.
Sifuna said his new party, The Equitable Party, was undergoing changes before being renamed Linda Mwananchi Movement, adding that coalition talks would come later.
Jubilee deputy leader Jeremiah Kioni also said the party was in no hurry to join TUA, arguing that the opposition needed fresh ideas.
However, Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa have backed the alliance, viewing Kalonzo as a suitable presidential candidate.
Efforts are also underway to persuade Gachagua or Siaya Governor James Orengo to replace former President Uhuru Kenyatta as coalition council chairperson. Gachagua’s ally, Gatanga MP Edward Muriu, said DCP wanted to strengthen its support before negotiating with other parties.
Political analyst David Monda warned that opposition leaders risked defeating themselves if they failed to unite behind one presidential candidate.
