Ann Waiguru Announces her Plan to be Ruto’s Deputy in 2027
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has expressed interest in becoming President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 General Election, signalling her ambitions to move into national leadership after completing her second term.
Waiguru dismissed suggestions that she should contest for the Kirinyaga Senate seat, saying she was preparing for a higher political role instead of returning to county-level elective politics.
Speaking in Kirinyaga on Friday, October 9, the governor endorsed her County Executive Committee Member for Cooperatives, Trade and Tourism, Calvert Njeru, to contest for the Senate seat.
She described Njeru as a capable candidate who understood the needs of residents and had the experience required to represent them effectively in Parliament.
Waiguru also pointed to her presence alongside President Ruto during international engagements as evidence of her growing involvement in national affairs.
She cited appearances alongside the Head of State during engagements in New York, including United Nations activities, while emphasising that she was positioning herself for a place at the national leadership table.
Her remarks come amid growing political discussions about the possible candidates who could serve as Ruto’s deputy should he seek another presidential term.
Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari has already backed Waiguru for the position, urging First Lady Rachel Ruto to convey his appeal to the President.
Gitari argued that gender representation should be considered when selecting the running mate for the 2027 elections.
Waiguru has maintained her support for Ruto and dismissed suggestions that she could join the political camp led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
She previously stated that her political position remained unchanged from the arrangement established during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
The governor also questioned whether the opposition could mount a coordinated challenge against Ruto, citing divisions among its leaders and the absence of a common strategy.
Her endorsement of Njeru now gives the county official her backing as he considers a Senate bid, while Waiguru turns her attention to the national political contest.
However, Ruto has not publicly confirmed Waiguru as his preferred running mate, leaving the question of his 2027 deputy open as political alignments continue to develop.
