SC Ahmednasir Clashes With Matiang’i Over President Ruto’s Leadership
The ongoing war of words between President William Ruto and the opposition has intensified, with political leaders from both sides trading accusations over governance, development priorities and the fulfilment of campaign promises.
Opposition leaders have repeatedly criticised President Ruto, accusing his administration of failing to honour commitments made to Kenyans during the 2022 election campaigns. They have also raised concerns about what they describe as the erosion of development gains achieved during the administrations of former presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta.
The criticism has intensified following the government’s privatisation plans involving state-owned enterprises and proposals for major projects, including the planned Dangote oil refinery in Lamu. Led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, a prominent figure associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, the opposition has demanded greater transparency, particularly regarding the ownership structures and shareholders involved in such projects.
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has also called on the government to make relevant agreements public, reportedly warning that action could follow if the documents are not produced. The growing pressure has heightened political tensions, with President Ruto suggesting that the opposition’s demands may be politically motivated.
Amid the escalating exchanges, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has weighed in, accusing Ruto of failing to uphold the dignity of the presidency.
“There is no President in the Republic of Kenya who has ever let down the presidency like William Ruto,” Matiang’i reportedly said.
His remarks, however, attracted a sharp response from Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, who questioned Matiang’i’s suitability to criticise the current administration. Ahmednasir pointed to controversies surrounding Matiang’i’s tenure as Interior Cabinet Secretary, invoking past allegations of excessive force and human rights abuses.
The exchange adds another dimension to Kenya’s increasingly heated political debate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
