When They Came To Power, Minimum Wage Was N30K, It Bought 118Ltrs of fuel. N70k Buys Only 50″ Shaibu
According to a video posted on Trust TV on Saturday October 10, 2026, Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the Atiku campaign organization, said the minimum wage of 30,000 naira could buy 118 litres of fuel when the present government took office, while the current 70,000 naira buys only about 50 litres.
Mr. Shaibu spoke on Daily Politics while discussing the rising cost of living and the government’s plan to offer cheaper petrol for 30 days.
He said the effects of removing the fuel subsidy have gone beyond the pump and now affect food, transport and school fees.
In his words, Mr. Shaibu said, “You went to the university. How much did you pay as fees in this country? As at the time Tinubu came to power, our minimum wage was just 30,000 naira.
“That money could buy you 118 litres of fuel. They increased the minimum wage to 70,000 naira. 70,000 can barely give you 50 litres of fuel. Now you increase school fees,” he said.
The host replied that about 80 percent of students at his university draw from the student loan fund, NELFUND.
Mr. Shaibu said he had not denied that students were using the fund.
He said his point was that government cannot raise school fees and then offer loans, as this amounts to giving with one hand and collecting with the other.
The host also said it is easy for the opposition to make claims, and that parties often change their story once in office.
Mr. Shaibu answered that Atiku Abubakar is not only an opposition figure, but a former Vice President. He said privatisation during that period followed legal processes.
He repeated that the Atiku campaign would bring in a production-based subsidy to lower the cost of living for all Nigerians.
