2015: The Wife Of The President Called Me And Told Me, ‘I Will Put You In Prison If You Win’–Amaechi
In a video shared on Symfoni TV on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Rotimi Amaechi, ADC Vice Presidential Candidate and former governor of Rivers State, recalled an alleged threat he received during the political struggle surrounding the 2015 general election, while encouraging opposition members to remain courageous ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Amaechi made the remarks while addressing members of the ADC presidential campaign council. He reflected on his experience campaigning against an incumbent government and explained that political pressure and intimidation did not prevent him and his associates from pursuing their electoral objectives.
According to Amaechi, “The wife of the president called me and told me, ‘I will put you in prison if you win.’” He recounted the alleged telephone conversation as part of his explanation of the difficulties he faced during the campaign period.
The former Rivers State governor used the experience to encourage members of the ADC campaign council not to allow fear to undermine their efforts. He argued that political power should not be regarded as permanent and that opposition parties must remain focused on their objectives even when they encounter resistance.
Amaechi also recalled incidents in which he alleged that authorities prevented him from travelling from certain airports while he was governor. He explained that these experiences strengthened his determination to continue the political struggle that eventually resulted in a change of government in 2015.
Turning to the forthcoming election, Amaechi urged ADC members to build public confidence in their presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and communicate the party’s message effectively to Nigerians. He stressed that the campaign should address concerns about the economy, fuel prices, poverty and the rising cost of living.
He further warned against allowing claims that the election could be manipulated to discourage voters from participating in the democratic process. Instead, he encouraged campaign officials to concentrate on presenting facts, explaining policy alternatives and mobilising supporters.
He concluded by urging members of the ADC presidential campaign council to remain courageous, avoid bitterness and conduct an issue based campaign as they prepare for the 2027 general election.
