Ruth Odinga Sounds Alarm Over Homa Bay Gang Violence as She Questions Police Response at Night

Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has sounded the alarm over the escalating threat of gang violence in the Nyanza region, questioning why security agencies have seemingly failed to stop groups accused of destroying property and disrupting businesses in Homa Bay.

Odinga warned that the growing culture of goonism could become increasingly difficult for the government to contain if suspected perpetrators continue operating without decisive action.

She challenged security agencies to explain why violence could reportedly continue throughout the night without an effective response, raising concerns about the safety of residents and traders.

Speaking about the situation, the Kisumu legislator described the problem as an emerging security threat that requires urgent intervention before it spreads further across the region and beyond.

“As a leader in Kisumu County, in Kenya, and especially within Nyanza Region and the whole of Kenya, this growing and escalating issue of the dragon, which we call ‘goonism’ or ‘goons,’ is becoming one that I am saying with confidence that is going to really, really be difficult for the government to control,” she said.

Her remarks come amid concerns over reported incidents of overnight violence in Homa Bay, where gangs allegedly rioted, destroyed property and disrupted business operations.

The incidents have raised questions about the effectiveness of security arrangements and the ability of police to respond promptly when residents are under threat.

Odinga expressed particular concern that officers reportedly intervened in the morning after the destruction had continued throughout the night, demanding answers from those responsible for maintaining law and order.

“Do you mean to tell me that there is no security at night in Homa Bay? And that security can only come out at daytime?” she posed.

The legislator also questioned why individuals allegedly known to security agencies could continue moving freely, arguing that delayed action risks allowing criminal networks to become more established.

“It is high time, and some of us as leaders are wondering when proper, proper action will be taken,” she stated, calling for a more decisive response to the growing concerns.
