Noni Madueke justifies surprise Mikel Arteta team selection as injury blow opens up opportunity
According to a report by the Evening Standard on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Noni Madueke justified Mikel Arteta’s decision to hand him a surprise starting role as Arsenal defeated Leeds United 2-1 in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium.
The England international was selected on the left wing following Christos Tzolis’ hamstring injury, taking the position ahead of Eberechi Eze. Madueke made the most of the opportunity, producing an impressive attacking display that helped Arsenal recover from a difficult afternoon.
Madueke had not started on the left wing since the opening months of the previous season, but his performance against Leeds demonstrated the benefits of deploying him in his more familiar position.
Arsenal struggled to find their rhythm during the opening half, with loose passes and poorly timed runs preventing the hosts from establishing control. However, Madueke provided a bright spot with his direct approach, pace and willingness to take on defenders.
The winger beat Jayden Bogle on the outside before delivering a cross that allowed Kai Havertz to test Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford with a header. He also threatened on the counter-attack, although Bukayo Saka failed to provide an accurate pass that could have sent him through on goal.
Madueke maintained his influence after the interval, creating an opportunity for Martin Odegaard with a cut-back before producing a curling cross to the back post that contributed to Arsenal’s equaliser.
Riccardo Calafiori converted from close range in the 62nd minute after Ben White supplied the assist, cancelling out James Justin’s 55th-minute opener for Leeds.
According to the Evening Standard report, Madueke created three chances, more than any other player on the pitch. He also led the match in shots and touches inside the opposition’s penalty area, underlining his contribution to Arsenal’s attacking efforts.
The winger’s performance came as Arsenal struggled to rediscover their rhythm following a three-week international break. The Gunners had returned to action after losing 3-0 to Brighton before the break and needed a second-half recovery to secure victory.
Bruno Guimaraes eventually completed the comeback in the 70th minute, scoring from the edge of the penalty area after being introduced by Arteta.
While the Brazilian’s decisive contribution secured the three points, Madueke’s display provided another positive for the Arsenal manager, who trusted him with an opportunity on the left flank.
The performance offered evidence that Madueke could provide a useful attacking option when called upon, particularly when Arsenal need greater directness and pace in wide areas.
