Thomas Clegg Methodist Church in Kaneshie, Accra. Nii Sabahn Quaye died on Sunday, 28 June 2026, aged 77, following a period of protracted illness.
He spent many years as team manager of Hearts of Oak and played an important role during some of the club’s most successful periods. He was widely respected in Ghanaian football for his professionalism, discipline and long service to the game.
His experience and ability to manage players later led to his appointment as team manager of the Black Stars. He was highly regarded for his knowledge of football and for the fatherly support he offered players, carrying out his responsibilities with diligence and excellence.
After his spells with Hearts of Oak and the Black Stars, Nii Sabahn Quaye worked as team manager and administrator at Legon Cities FC until he became ill.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that members of the football community will attend the funeral to pay their final respects to the former colleague.
At the family’s final funeral planning meeting on Saturday, 3 October 2026, GFA Foundation director Malcolm Frazier Appeadu attended to familiarise himself with the arrangements and other relevant details.
Mr Appeadu also conveyed the GFA President’s deepest condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of the football community’s support at the funeral. The family expressed its sincere gratitude to the GFA for its assistance with the funeral preparations.
It was previously reported that, on 19 April 2023, GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku led a delegation of football administrators and former Black Stars players to visit Nii Sabahn Quaye a year after he fell ill. During that visit, the GFA Foundation made a financial donation to support his recovery.
The GFA and Ghana’s wider football community have paid tribute to Nii Sabahn Quaye’s dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to the country’s football.
The Association has extended its condolences to his family, widow and children, while urging the football community to support them in giving him a befitting and honourable farewell.
