Lilian Kumah Breaks Silence on Poisoning Claims, Insists Severe Blood Condition Caused His Death
Apostle Lilian Kumah, the widow of the late Ghanaian politician John Kumah, has strongly rejected allegations that her husband was poisoned, insisting that his death resulted from a serious blood-related illness diagnosed months before he passed away.
Her comments come amid continuing public discussions and speculation surrounding the circumstances of the death of the former Deputy Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, who died in March 2024.
Apostle Lilian Kumah has described suggestions that her husband died after consuming contaminated food or being deliberately poisoned as inaccurate and distressing to the family. She maintains that medical examinations conducted in Germany and Ghana did not reveal evidence to support such claims.
In an interview, the widow explained that her husband’s health challenges first came to light in August 2023, when he travelled to Germany for medical assessment. According to her account, the examinations revealed a serious blood condition that subsequently became a major concern for the family.
She said further medical investigations carried out by health professionals in Germany and Ghana did not establish that poisoning was responsible for his deteriorating condition.
The widow’s remarks were directed at allegations attributed to broadcaster Captain Smart, which she considers misleading and hurtful. She expressed concern that claims about her husband’s death continue to circulate despite the medical information available to the family.
Apostle Kumah believes that spreading unverified accounts of the circumstances surrounding the politician’s death risks deepening the pain experienced by his relatives, who are still dealing with the loss of their loved one.
She also recalled the final stages of her husband’s illness, explaining that despite his worsening health, he remained committed to his public duties. His determination to continue serving in his political role, she indicated, persisted even as his condition became increasingly serious.
On March 7, 2024, John Kumah was reportedly taken to Suhum Government Hospital after suffering a severe health crisis. However, medical personnel were unable to save his life.
His death shocked many people in Ghana’s political community, particularly members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with whom he served in Parliament and government.
Since his passing, different accounts and questions about the circumstances surrounding his death have generated public discussion. Apostle Kumah’s latest intervention appears aimed at challenging what she views as baseless speculation and directing attention back to the medical explanation provided to the family.
She has urged the public to exercise restraint and avoid presenting rumours as established facts. According to her, the medical documents available to the family explain the illness that preceded her husband’s death and should be considered when discussing the matter.
The widow has also appealed for compassion and respect for the family’s privacy, stressing the emotional difficulty of repeatedly confronting allegations about a loved one who can no longer respond for himself.
Her position is that John Kumah’s death should not continue to be surrounded by unsupported accusations when, according to her account, medical investigations did not establish poisoning as the cause.
As debate over the former MP’s death continues, Apostle Lilian Kumah is calling on the public to approach the matter responsibly, respect the family’s grief and rely on credible information rather than speculation.
