SAD NEWS: Military Chopper Full of Soldiers Crashes Today, Killing Several on Board
Several people are feared dead after a suspected military helicopter carrying soldiers went down in Igbokoda, Ondo State, Nigeria, on Monday morning.
The aircraft crashed in a swampy area across from a naval base in Igbokoda, the headquarters of the Ilaje Local Government Area.The incident caused alarm in the coastal community as residents gathered near the scene.
Ilaje Local Government Area Chairman Maurice Oripelaye confirmed the accident, saying the helicopter caught fire and was destroyed at the site.
Military equipment was found among the remains, but officials had not established the exact number of people who were aboard the aircraft at the time of the crash.
Authorities had also not confirmed the helicopter’s identity, where it had taken off from or its intended destination.
The purpose of the flight was similarly unclear as officials continued to gather information.
The uncertainty surrounding the aircraft has made it difficult to confirm the number of casualties, although people on board were feared to have lost their lives.Ondo State Police spokesperson DSP Jimoh Abayomi confirmed that an aircraft had crashed in the area.
He said authorities were still working to determine what led to the accident and establish other details.
The police spokesperson appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified reports.
He said officials would provide more information once the facts had been established.
Residents and eyewitnesses gathered near the location as security teams moved to control access to the site and inspect the wreckage.
The presence of military equipment further suggested that the aircraft may have been carrying military personnel.
The cause of the accident was still unknown. Officials had not said whether the helicopter suffered a mechanical fault, faced difficult weather or encountered another problem during the flight.
The Nigerian military had also not issued an official statement confirming the number of personnel aboard the helicopter or explaining its mission.
