Mourners Stunned as Kalonzo Surprises a Singer During Martha Karua’s Father’s Burial — Details

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka surprised a singer with a cash gift during the burial ceremony of Mwalimu Jackson Karua in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

Kalonzo was among the political leaders who attended the ceremony to pay their final respects to Mwalimu Karua, the father of former Justice Minister Martha Karua.

The burial brought together family members, friends, religious leaders and several prominent politicians who travelled to Gichugu for the final send-off.

The late Mwalimu Karua died on September 27, 2026, aged 98. His family has described him as a man who placed great value on education, family and good values.

During Saturday’s ceremony, attention also turned to a singer who entertained mourners as the programme continued. Kalonzo stepped forward and gave the musician a cash gift, drawing attention from those at the venue.

The gesture added a lighter moment to an otherwise emotional occasion as mourners gathered to honour the veteran educator.

Kalonzo was also seen interacting with other political leaders at the burial. Among those present were retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and other politicians.

The gathering comes at a time when political activities are increasing across the country ahead of the 2027 General Election.

However, the main focus of the event remained the life and legacy of Mwalimu Karua. The funeral service was held at Mugumo Primary School in Gichugu before mourners were expected to proceed to the family home in Kathande for his final burial.

The ceremony also gave leaders from different political camps an opportunity to meet and interact as they joined the Karua family in mourning.

Mwalimu Karua’s burial has attracted widespread attention because of his daughter Martha Karua’s long career in Kenyan politics and public service. Mourners gathered to remember him and give the family support during the final farewell.
