Leaders of bus, truck drivers call off the two-day strike after talks with PM Nchemba

DAR ES SALAAM: PRIME Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has held talks with leaders representing bus and truck drivers in Tanzania to discuss challenges facing the sector, with both sides agreeing to suspend a drivers’ strike that had lasted for two days.

The talks were held today, September 30, 2026, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Oysterbay, Dar es Salaam.

Following the meeting, drivers’ leaders agreed to call off the strike and resume passenger and cargo transport services, allowing transportation activities to return to normal.

The decision was reached after the government expressed its readiness to listen to the concerns raised by drivers and work toward addressing them through the appropriate procedures.

The strike began on September 29, 2026, disrupting bus and truck services in several parts of the country. The stoppage left some passengers stranded at bus stations and affected commercial activities and the movement of goods.

According to the statement, the government and drivers’ representatives reached an agreement to suspend the strike, a move expected to restore passenger and freight transport services.

The two sides also agreed to continue discussions on the challenges facing drivers, with the government pledging to consider and address the issues in accordance with established procedures.
