Martha Karua’s Late Father Jackson’s Emotional Video Recalling Family Memories Emerges

An emotional throwback video featuring the late Mwalimu Jackson Karua, father of former presidential candidate Martha Karua, has resurfaced online days after his death, giving Kenyans a glimpse into his memories of his family and his daughter’s journey.

The video, shared on the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) Kenya TikTok page, shows Jackson seated in a home setting as he spoke warmly in a mixture of Kiswahili and Gikuyu. Archival footage of political rallies and a State House swearing in ceremony appeared alongside his reflections, while a copy of Martha Karua’s memoir Against the Tide was also visible. TUKO reported that the footage appeared to have been recorded around the period when Karua launched the memoir in November 2024.

During the interview, Jackson spoke fondly about his wife, Josephine, recalling how their journey began when they were young. He also reflected on watching Martha grow up before she later established herself in law and public life.

One of the memories he shared involved a public gathering in Kianyaga where Martha initially struggled to get an opportunity to address the crowd. According to the account in the resurfaced video, she eventually managed to win over those present.

Jackson also recalled a lighter moment from Martha’s school days involving a teacher who wanted to cane female students. Martha remembered the incident with laughter, while her father recalled intervening and asking the teacher to punish her on the hands rather than the back.

The footage has taken on greater emotional significance following Jackson’s death on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Martha had visited him in Kirinyaga earlier that day alongside her siblings, and the family spent time together singing his favourite gospel hymn. She later received news of his death while travelling back to Nairobi.

In her tribute, Karua described her father as a principled teacher who placed great value on character, education and doing what was right. She also said he had supported her from her school days through her legal career and public life.

The resurfaced video has since attracted emotional reactions from Kenyans, with viewers remembering Jackson as a teacher and a supportive father. Some commenters on the PLP Kenya post shared condolences and recalled encounters with him from his years as an educator.

Martha Karua ended her tribute to her father with the words, “Huruka thayu, baba,” as she mourned a man she said she would deeply miss for his voice, counsel, encouragement and constant presence in her life.
