Former president John Evans Atta Mills’ Son Describes Dr Mahamdu Bawumia as Extremely Disappointing

The son of the late former President John Evans Atta Mills has entered Ghana’s political discourse after openly expressing criticism of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia during a television interview on Onua TV.

Speaking on the station’s morning programme hosted by media personality Captain Smart, Atta Mills’ son described Dr. Bawumia’s performance as “extremely disappointing,” a comment that has attracted reactions from political supporters and commentators.

During the interview, he discussed Ghana’s political landscape and drew comparisons between Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama. Although he acknowledged that Mahama has faced criticism over his time in office, he said he still regarded the former president as a preferable leader.

His comments also brought attention to earlier criticisms involving Samira Bawumia, who had previously described Mahama as “incompetent” during a political campaign. The exchange reflects the longstanding political rivalry between figures and supporters associated with the NPP and NDC.

Bawumia, an economist and former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has been closely associated with economic policy, financial-sector reforms and the government’s digitalisation agenda. His supporters have highlighted those areas as important aspects of his public record.

At the same time, his critics have linked him to the government’s handling of economic challenges, including inflation and increased living costs, arguing that these issues have influenced public perceptions of his performance.

The interview also touched on the differing policy priorities associated with Bawumia and Mahama. Bawumia has generally been identified with economic management and digital transformation initiatives, while Mahama’s administration has been associated with infrastructure projects and various social intervention programmes.

The comments from Atta Mills’ son have subsequently fueled further discussion on social media, with supporters of both the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress expressing contrasting views about the two political figures and their records in government.
