Assistant Director II Receives GH₵4,200 Monthly, Yet Someone Receives Same In A Day Meeting – Obenfo

According to a report by Onua TV on September 28th, 2026, the National Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools, Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, has described the disparity between public sector pay and meeting allowances as “deeply unfair.”

Speaking on the ongoing teacher unions’ strike, he noted that an Assistant Director II in the Ghana Education Service earns GH₵4,200 a month, yet someone else can receive the same amount as a one-day meeting allowance.

His comparison puts a spotlight on how public resources are prioritised. For many educators, a full month of work, planning lessons, teaching, marking and mentoring pupils, is rewarded with the same sum that others collect for attending a single meeting. Such a gap, he suggests, erodes morale and undermines the value placed on the teaching profession.

Mr. Gyetuah also pointed to a deeper administrative problem behind the frustrations of striking teachers. According to him, there are no proper records of unpaid salaries and allowances, which makes it difficult for teachers to claim the money they are owed. Without reliable documentation, workers struggle to prove their entitlements, and delays in payment become harder to resolve.

The implications are significant. Persistent pay disparities and poor record-keeping can weaken trust between teachers and their employers, fuel industrial action and disrupt teaching and learning. When classrooms remain empty, it is the pupils who ultimately bear the cost.

His remarks come as teacher unions met with the Ministry of Education today in an effort to resolve the strike. Teachers have maintained that they will not return to the classroom until they are paid what they are owed.

Mr. Gyetuah’s observations underline the need for fair remuneration, transparent payment records and a sustained commitment to the welfare of teachers, so that the nation’s education system can function without disruption.
