The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced the resumption of spillage from the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, 2026, and advised residents living downstream to take precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuation.
The company said heavy rains upstream and prolonged rainfall around the Densu River and its environs have caused the dam’s water level to rise to 45.2 feet, bringing it close to the 46-foot threshold.
It said the spillage would be carried out as a precautionary measure to protect the dam.
Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding communities.
The Ghana Water Company Limited has urged the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the district assembly, traditional authorities, assembly members and residents’ associations to take precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuation.
Residents have also been advised to remain alert, follow official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could put their lives at risk.
