In Legon, Ghana, Makeup Ghana, together with the College of Humanities at the University of Ghana, held a technical stakeholder workshop that launched preparations for the first Ghana Beauty & Wellness Report, a report on the country’s beauty and wellness industry. The meeting took place on September 3, 2026, at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens at the University of Ghana.

The workshop brought together representatives of government institutions, regulators, academia, financial organizations, industry associations, educational institutions, development organizations and the private sector. As MyJoyOnline reports, the event was part of activities ahead of the 10th Ghana Beauty Awards, held under the theme “10 Years of Impact: The Legacy Era.”

Industry data

The future report is intended to become the first comprehensive, data-driven study of the industry. It is being developed to address the lack of reliable statistics and documentation on the sector, whose scale and potential had previously been discussed mainly on the basis of isolated estimates.

The authors plan to analyze the sector’s economic contribution, business landscape, employment, skills development, consumer trends, production and value addition, standards and regulation, access to finance, investment opportunities, as well as challenges and prospects for sustainable growth.

More current news is available on the UA.News Telegram channel Telegram.

Makeup Ghana founder and CEO Lady Rebecca Donkor said the purpose of the study is to provide an evidence base for discussions about the industry’s scale and potential. According to her, the report should help measure the sector’s contribution, identify gaps and provide information for policy, investment and business development.

Research and next steps

Professor of Marketing and Entrepreneurship at the College of Humanities of the University of Ghana Sheena Lovia Boateng was appointed chair of the steering committee and lead researcher. She will be responsible for the research methodology, academic rigor and strategic direction of the work.

Workshop participants identified the number and profile of companies and professionals, professional training, certification, access to finance and investment, local production, and consumer behavior as research priorities. They also emphasized the need to strengthen regulation, raise training standards, improve beauty-sector small and medium-sized enterprises’ access to affordable financing, and support local cosmetics production.

Next, the steering committee and research team are to refine the research framework, identify and collect data, conduct broader consultations and prepare the report. Makeup Ghana called on businesses, brands, institutions and partners to support the initiative, including through partnerships, sponsorship or data provision.
