The Nigerian government has expressed deep concern over the prevailing political and security situation in the Republic of Niger, urging the country’s government and people to work towards restoring stability and constitutional order.

In a statement signed by Oluwafemi Adeniyi, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, on Sunday, August 30, 2026, the Federal Government said Nigeria, as a neighbouring country with strong historical, fraternal and cultural ties with Niger, remained keenly interested in peace, security, democracy and development in the country.

“The Government of Nigeria views with deep concern the current political and security situation in the Republic of Niger,” the statement said.

The ministry stressed that developments in Niger have implications beyond its borders, particularly for Nigeria and the wider Sahel region.

It said, “In this regard, it notes that a peaceful, secure and stable situation in Niger will impact positively and directly on Nigeria, the sub-region and the Sahel.”

The Federal Government warned against the use of force as a means of resolving political disagreements, saying such an approach could undermine efforts to achieve peace and stability.

“Any resort to the use of force to settle political differences detracts from this objective,” the statement added.

Nigeria consequently called on the Nigerien government and citizens to pursue dialogue and cooperation towards resolving the country’s challenges.

“It therefore urges the government and people of Niger to work together towards an inclusive and participatory return to stability and constitutional order in the interest of the country, regional peace and stability,” the ministry said.
