The Federal Government of Nigeria expresses its profound and deepest sympathies to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China following the news of the tragic floods and landslides along the China-Nepal.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Spokesperson, Fedrral Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi on Friday.

Adeniyi said the disaster, which occurred on 26th August 2026 resulted in the colossal loss of over 500 lives, leaving many hundreds more injured, and causing extensive destruction in areas such as Gyirong County in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).

“The Government of Nigeria therefore extended its heartfelt condolences and thoughts to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China over the deadly impact of the disaster, which resulted to the loss of many Chinese and Nepali lives as well as lives of tourists from Australia, India, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, among others.

“Nigeria commiserates with bereaved families, the injured, the displaced, and the communities whose homes and livelihoods have been severely impacted by the devastating natural disaster.

“Standing in solidarity with China during this challenging period of grief, we commend the prompt emergency response of the Chinese authorities under the leadership of His Excellency President Xi Jinping”, he said.

The Spokesperson further said Nigeria also acknowledge and commend progress being made in saving lives, providing much-needed humanitarian assistance and supporting communities affected by the
monumental tragedy.

“In this regard, Nigeria salutes the courage
and altruism demonstrated by the Chinese first responders and rescue teams, whose tireless efforts continue to save lives and
provide critical assistance to those affected by the disaster.

“Nigeria remains optimistic that with resilience and collective strength being shown in the rescue and recovery operations, those affected by this tragedy will emerge stronger.

“May the souls of those who have lost their lives rest in peace, and may the injured and affected families find strength, comfort, and hope as recovery and reconstruction efforts continue”, the statement concluded.
