The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) says the planned Takoradi Floating Dock project, backed by £101 million in financing, will significantly strengthen Ghana’s ship repair and offshore service capabilities.
Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Board Chairman of the GPHA, said the project would further position Takoradi as a leading maritime hub in the West African sub-region.
He said the investment formed part of broader efforts to expand port infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in the global maritime industry.
The Board Chairman said this when he addressed stakeholders at a ceremony in Tema to launch the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the GPHA.
According to him, the floating dock project would boost the country’s ship repair capacity and provide critical support to offshore operations.
“These investments are more than infrastructure projects; they are investments in Ghana’s economic growth, competitiveness and the future of our maritime industry,” he said.
He said the transformation of Takoradi Port, together with the expansion of Tema Port, demonstrated the government’s commitment to developing world-class maritime infrastructure capable of meeting the demands of global trade.
He noted that the two ports played a critical role in Ghana’s economy by facilitating international trade, supporting industries, and providing logistics services to the oil and gas sector.
The board chairman said the authority had, over the past 40 years, overseen significant infrastructure development through public-private partnerships, automation, and advanced information technology systems. 
He cited the completion of a 3.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) container terminal, as well as investments in a dry bulk terminal and a natural gas liquid export terminal at Takoradi.
He said GPHA would continue to focus on increasing port capacity, embracing green-port initiatives and leveraging technology to develop smart ports capable of meeting future demands.
Major-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, Director General of GPHA, welcoming guests to the launch, said 40 years ago, the GPHA was established to develop and operate Ghana’s seaports to aid international trade and drive national development. 
Major-General Tanye-Kulono stated that “over 40 years, we have grown into a modern and vibrant entity. Our ports are now critical gateways to Ghana’s economy and vital hubs for the wider West African subregion. So today, we celebrate more than 40 years. We celebrate general industrial transformation and service.”
He acknowledged the dedication of the staff, which, he said, had shaped the GPHA’s current status, stressing that “we are proud of what we have achieved, including modernised ports, stronger infrastructure, better technology, and reduced fee services.”
