UBA Ghana Ltd has delivered a resilient performance for the first half of 2026, recording significant growth in its balance sheet, a more than doubling of customer loans, stronger capital and liquidity positions, and a sharp improvement in asset quality.

According to the Bank’s unaudited condensed financial statements for the six months ended 30 June 2026, total assets increased to GH¢13.27 billion, compared with GH¢11.72 billion at the end of June 2025, representing growth of approximately 13.2%.

A major highlight of the half-year performance was the significant expansion in credit to customers.

Loans and advances increased by 108.4%, from GH¢721.7 million in June 2025 to GH¢1.50 billion in June 2026, reflecting the Bank’s increased support for businesses and customers across the economy.

Importantly, the strong growth in lending was achieved alongside a substantial improvement in asset quality. UBA Ghana’s gross Non-Performing Loan ratio declined from 17.3% in June 2025 to 1.7% in June 2026, highlighting strengthened credit-risk management and portfolio quality.

Commenting on the performance, Bernard Gyebi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Ghana, said the results demonstrate the Bank’s focus on sustainable growth and its commitment to supporting customers and the Ghanaian economy.

“Our first-half performance reflects the strength and resilience of our franchise and, importantly, our determination to grow responsibly. We have more than doubled our lending to customers while significantly improving the quality of our loan book. This demonstrates that we can support the growth ambitions of businesses and individuals while maintaining strong risk-management discipline.”

The strong growth in lending supports the governments push for the 24hour economy by providing funding to businesses to expand their enterprises and improve their yields.

UBA Ghana also strengthened its capital position during the period, with total equity increasing by 20.5% to GH¢2.03 billion, from GH¢1.69 billion in June 2025.

The Bank’s Capital Adequacy Ratio improved to 21.4% from 14.8%, while its Common Equity Tier 1 ratio strengthened to 19.4% from 12.7%. Its leverage ratio also improved from 8.0% to 10.2%.

Liquidity remained particularly strong, with the Bank reporting a liquidity ratio of 119.3%, up substantially from 76.9% in June 2025.

Mr. Gyebi noted that these indicators provide a strong foundation for the Bank’s growth ambitions.
“Our strong capital and liquidity positions give us greater capacity to support our customers and pursue opportunities in key sectors of the economy. We remain focused on building a stronger UBA Ghana that combines growth, prudent risk management, innovation and exceptional customer experience.”

Profitable Despite a Challenging Operating Environment

UBA Ghana remained profitable during the first half of the year, recording profit before tax of GH¢238.1 million and profit after tax of GH¢133.1 million. Net operating income stood at GH¢383.6 million.

Profitability was lower than the corresponding period of 2025, when profit before tax stood at GH¢282.8 million. This reflected, among other factors, a decline in net interest income from GH¢332.4 million to GH¢264.2 million during the period.

Net fees and commission income increased significantly from GH¢35.1 million to GH¢58.8 million, representing growth of approximately 67.8%, demonstrating increased contribution from transaction and fee-based activities.

Supporting Businesses and Economic Growth

UBA Ghana’s strong loan growth is particularly significant as the Bank continues to deepen its support for businesses and productive sectors of the economy.

Customer deposits stood at GH¢9.21 billion at the end of June 2026, while cash and bank balances increased to GH¢3.66 billion. The Bank generated GH¢662.5 million in net cash from operating activities during the first six months of the year and ended the period with GH¢3.66 billion in cash and bank balances.

Mr. Gyebi said UBA Ghana would build on the performance in the second half of the year by focusing on customer acquisition, liability growth, responsible lending and increased adoption of the Bank’s digital channels.

“Our priority for the second half is clear: deepen our relationships with customers, grow quality deposits, extend responsible credit to viable businesses and individuals, and continue making banking simpler and more accessible through our digital channels. We see significant opportunities in the Ghanaian economy and intend to play an increasingly important role in financing its growth.”

The Bank’s half-year results show a business with a larger balance sheet, substantially expanded loan portfolio, stronger capital base, high liquidity and significantly improved asset quality.

UBA Ghana is a subsidiary of United Bank for Africa Plc and provides retail, corporate and investment banking services in Ghana.
