The People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) has emerged as a new political vehicle in the opposition landscape after Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro took over its leadership and announced that he and his supporters had joined the opposition.

PPK is a registered political party that presents itself as a grassroots movement built around ordinary Kenyans, including teachers, traders, farmers, boda boda riders and young people. It operates under the slogan “Sauti ya Wakenya” (Your voice. Your party. Your Kenya).

Nyoro’s entry gives the party a high-profile political figure with an established base in Mount Kenya and experience within the Kenya Kwanza administration.

So, what is PPK? Why has Nyoro chosen it and what role could it play in the 2027 General Election?

What is the People’s Party of Kenya?

The People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) is a fully registered political party, issued certificate serial number 022 by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties on May 14, 2012.

The party’s official symbol is a microphone, while its colours are blue, red, green and white. Its slogan is “Usawa Haki Uhuru” (Equality, Justice, Freedom).

PPK is headquartered at Ruprani House, Moktar Dada Street. Although formally registered in 2012, historical records indicate that the party was established around 1996.

PPK’s political platform focuses on four broad areas: reducing the cost of living, creating jobs and affordable capital for small businesses, improving healthcare and education, and strengthening accountability in government.

The party proposes reducing taxes on household essentials, expanding access to affordable financing for small businesses and ensuring hospitals have medicines and adequately staffed facilities.

It also seeks to address overcrowded classrooms and promote greater transparency in the use of public funds. Its devolution agenda focuses on ensuring resources reach counties and local communities.

The party’s grassroots positioning places ordinary citizens at the centre of its political message.

Why did Nyoro join PPK?

Nyoro announced his move on Monday, August 17, 2026, formally leaving the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

“Mimi kama Ndindi Nyoro na wafuasi wangu, kutoka leo, nimeingia chama inaitwa People’s Party of Kenya. As all members of the People’s Party of Kenya, we have today joined the opposition,” Nyoro declared.

He also asked Kenyans to consider PPK when making their political choices in 2027.

“Mkiangalia viongozi wale watapeleka Kenya mbele from next year, I also ask humbly the people of Kenya, muangalie pia People’s Party. Pia wao wako na viongozi wanaweza shikana mkono na wengine na tukomboe Kenya August of next year,” he added.

The decision follows nearly a year of consultations with political leaders including Peter Munya, Martha Karua, James Orengo, Edwin Sifuna, Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i.

Orengo attended the announcement and welcomed Nyoro into the opposition.

Nyoro previously served as a prominent Kenya Kwanza supporter and was among the key Mount Kenya voices who backed President William Ruto during the 2022 General Election.

He also served as chairperson of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee.

What does PPK mean for 2027?

Nyoro is seeking to take PPK beyond Mount Kenya through nationwide mobilisation.

He plans to begin tours in Uasin Gishu, Kericho and Nandi, counties that have traditionally been strong political bases for Ruto.

He has also invited opposition aspirants to PPK rallies and promised to mentor MCA and parliamentary candidates seeking to run under the party banner.

This gives PPK a potential role in the wider opposition efforts ahead of 2027, although the party will first need to establish structures, attract candidates and build support beyond Nyoro’s Kiharu constituency.

Nyoro’s move therefore adds another political vehicle to an opposition field that is already taking shape, with parties and leaders continuing to position themselves ahead of the 2027 contest.
