The Ghana Formed Police Unit (GFPU-5), Sector 4, based in Beletweyne, Somalia, has commenced a five-day intensive weapons training programme to strengthen the operational readiness and weapon-handling skills of its personnel.

The exercise began on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at about 9:00 a.m. with a briefing parade led by the Platoon Commander, ASP Godwin Amedzo.

Addressing the personnel, ASP Amedzo urged them to take the in-service training seriously, stressing that they operate in a volatile environment where professionalism, discipline and proficiency in weapon handling are essential.

The training covers the use of machine guns, AK-47 rifles and NP-18 sidearms. Personnel are being trained in weapons safety, handling, dismantling, reassembly and the appropriate application of the various firearms.

To support the exercise, two specialist weapons instructors were deployed from Baidoa: AUPOL No. 6204 Pw/Sgt Ernestina Amponsah and AUPOL No. 6283 G/Sgt Isaac Aboagye.

The first day of the training ended successfully at about 1:00 p.m. at the Sector 4 GFPU Base Camp in Beletweyne without any incident.

The exercise is scheduled to continue for the next four days as personnel undergo further practical and technical training to enhance their preparedness for operational duties.
