In an influencer-obsessed world, star power is becoming a formidable force in politics so the addition of Duduzane Zuma to the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s leadership should come as no surprise.
Last week, MK Party president Jacob Zuma announced that his son Duduzane would be the party’s first deputy president, a move that analysts say will likely boost youth engagement during the party’s campaigning for the November 4 local government elections.
Duduzane, who has dabbled in politics, announced in 2024 that he was starting his own party but it failed to gain ground. However, he has a strong social media presence and can pull crowds when he speaks at universities, especially in KwaZulu-Natal.
Experts caution though celebrity appeal alone does not equate to governance capacity.
Professor Zwelethu Jolobe, a political analyst based at the University of Cape Town, said that, for young voters evaluating youth unemployment and failing service delivery, Duduzane’s appointment shifts focus to whether personal influence can translate into policy implementation.
“Without a demonstrated track record in municipal management or public administration, relying on brand status poses a risk of disillusionment if concrete local outcomes fail to materialise,” Jolobe warned.
He stated that to evaluate the party’s ward-level commitments beyond high-energy messaging, citizens needed to look past charismatic figures and closely inspect formal local government election manifestos, budget allocation plans, and the professional credentials of regional and ward-level council candidates.
Jolobe added that in contested hubs like KZN and Gauteng, placing Duduzane in the party’s leadership reinforces the party’s populist and loyalist base.
“However, it may alienate moderate or non-aligned voters concerned about governance standards and past controversies associated with the Zuma family. In terms of post-election municipal coalitions, potential partner parties may view this centralisation of power with caution, complicating multi-party coalition negotiations and stable council formations,” he said.
“The elevation of Duduzane Zuma signals a consolidation of dynastic power and suggests that long-term succession within the MK Party is being tied directly to the Zuma family lineage rather than internal democratic processes. By unilaterally replacing senior leaders like John Hlophe, Jacob Zuma demonstrates a top-down, command-style executive decision-making model where central authority rests solely with the party president rather than elected delegate structures,” Jolobe stated.
Professor Bheki Mngomezulu, a political analyst from Nelson Mandela University, said the youth want to vote for someone they can associate with.
“Duduzane is young and might appeal to the youth. He once bailed out students who were struggling to pay their university fees. As a young business person, he could work with the youth to address unemployment and service delivery challenges,” Mngomezulu said.
He stated that Duduzane also enjoys Zuma’s support base, while Zandile Gumede, the MK Party’s recently announced deputy convenor in KZN, has brought more supporters with her.
“Duduzane will bring the youth with him. Collectively, they stand a better chance to do well in the LGE generally, but especially in KZN and Gauteng. Post-election considerations will most likely consider like-minded political parties like African Transformation Movement (ATM), EFF, United Africans Transformation (UAT), etc.,” Mngomezulu said.
He added that the appointment of Duduzane means that Zuma wants to leave the party with someone he can trust.
“Intergenerational mix is the main message. This is what the ANC has been preaching but failed to implement. As a newcomer, the MKP will have less political baggage. Voters might give it the benefit of the doubt. Zuma has been close to the people. If his diverse team joins him, prospects look good,” Mngomezulu said.
He added that Duduzane is a member of the MKP and therefore qualifies to be appointed in any position.
“We don’t know if Zuma took a unilateral decision or if he announced a collective decision by the executive of the MKP,” Mngomezulu stated.
Professor Purshottama Reddy, a Public Governance specialist at the Graduate School of Business and Leadership at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, said social media presence plays a pivotal role in enhancing voter participation, and promoting greater public accountability, especially at the ward level.
“The local citizenry, whether living in informal housing, townships, or the suburbs, is blitzed daily on social media with updates on ward developments. This, in turn, results in local communities becoming more conscientised and politically aware, which can lead to greater public accountability from executive municipal functionaries, councillors, and political parties,” Reddy said.
He added that given the huge municipal backlogs built up over the past two decades, considerable pressure will be on the political parties that emerge victorious, or the ruling coalition local governments post-November 2026.
Reddy warned that appointments based on political dynasties or highly centralised leadership tend to have a negative impact on internal party democracy, robust public policy development, and additionally local coalition negotiations.
“It is imperative that the ranks of the executive leadership of political parties should be occupied by those who have, over time, acquired the requisite experience, expertise, and political acumen to provide quality leadership to take the country, province, and municipality forward. Leaders appointed or elected for reasons other than merit and a passion to serve the citizenry at large are likely to be a stumbling block to the further growth and development of the political party in question and its membership base,” he said.
