Kalonzo revives Kibaki-era message in bid for Kenya’s presidency

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has renewed his presidential campaign message by promising Kenyans a return to honest leadership, accountability and fair development as he positions himself ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, July 20, 2026, Kalonzo said Kenyans were tired of leaders who only remembered them during election periods.

“Kenyans are tired of being remembered only at election time. They want a government that serves them every day, not one built on handouts, empty promises, and the misuse of public resources for political gain,” Kalonzo said.

The former Vice President promised that his leadership would focus on integrity, transparency and ensuring every region benefits from national resources.

“I have heard you and I give you my word: this will not happen again,” he said.

Kalonzo’s message also revived his record working with former President Mwai Kibaki, highlighting the period after the 2002 General Election when the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) government took power.

“I have done this before. Together with President Mwai Kibaki, I helped lead Kenya through a season of stability, growth, and shared prosperity. I am ready to do it again,” he stated.

The reference to the Kibaki administration appears aimed at reminding voters of an era associated with economic growth, infrastructure expansion and political stability.

Kalonzo served as a senior government official during Kibaki’s first term and later became Vice President between 2008 and 2013 under the Grand Coalition Government.

Kalonzo’s 2027 strategy

The statement comes as Kalonzo continues to position himself as a possible opposition presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The Wiper leader has increasingly featured in discussions around the United Opposition’s search for a candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

His supporters have argued that his decades of political experience, national networks and ability to work with different political factions make him a suitable consensus candidate.

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi recently said he would support Kalonzo if he failed to secure the opposition ticket himself.

“If it will not be me, I will support my brother Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka to be the presidential candidate of the opposition,” Muturi said during a church service in Kamulu.

Kalonzo has also continued receiving attention from Kenya Kwanza leaders. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and other allies of President Ruto have previously encouraged him to work with the government, highlighting his influence in national politics.

Opposition unity debate

Kalonzo’s latest message comes amid renewed discussions on how the opposition will select its presidential candidate ahead of 2027.

The Wiper leader recently distanced himself from the WANTAM Advisory Committee platform, which claimed to give Kenyans a role in choosing the opposition flagbearer.

Kalonzo said the initiative had not been approved by Wiper, Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition or the United Alternative Government in Waiting.

“Any initiative that seeks to deepen citizen participation is welcome. We urge that it be conducted with the fairness, transparency and inclusivity its stated vision promises,” he said.

He added that the opposition would announce its official process for selecting a presidential candidate through recognised channels.

The statement followed a high-level meeting Kalonzo chaired with Azimio leaders, including Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, former Gatanga MP David Murathe and Azimio Executive Director Philip Kisia.

The meeting came after former President Uhuru Kenyatta restructured Azimio’s leadership, sparking speculation that the coalition could become the vehicle for the opposition’s 2027 presidential campaign.

In his latest campaign message, Kalonzo sought to present himself as a leader focused on institutions and governance rather than political competition.

“Together, we will restore trust in leadership, strengthen our institutions, and put service before politics,” he said.
