Officials from the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) have intercepted a massive shipment of illicit Tramadol valued at approximately GH¢100 million at the Accra International Airport (AIA).
The high-stakes operation, which unfolded late yesterday evening, also resulted in the immediate arrest of three suspects believed to be key members of an international drug trafficking syndicate.
Acting on a tip-off and months of intelligence gathering, NACOC operatives, in collaboration with airport security and customs officials, isolated a cargo consignment arriving on an international flight.
A thorough search of the crates, which were falsely declared as standard pharmaceutical supplements, revealed thousands of boxes of high-potency Tramadol tablets far exceeding the legally permissible dosage limits.
The three suspects, whose identities are currently being withheld to protect ongoing investigations, were arrested on the spot while attempting to clear the contraband cargo.
“This seizure represents one of the largest single counter-narcotics operations at the airport in recent months,” a senior NACOC official stated during a brief press briefing.
“The sheer volume of this interception highlights the relentless nature of these criminal networks, but it also proves the resilience and vigilance of our security agencies,” NACOC official added.
Tramadol abuse remains a major public health concern in Ghana, driving youth addiction and fueling various forms of street crime. However, NACOC has reiterated its commitment to choking the supply lines of illegal drugs into the country.
The suspects are currently in custody, assisting law enforcement with investigations, and they are expected to be arraigned before court early next week to face charges related to the illegal importation of controlled substances.
