Somanya (E/R), July 17, GNA – The GCB Bank has rewarded Miss Asana Abubakar Daasibi, a student of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), with GH¢10,000 for demonstrating honesty after reporting an erroneous GH¢6,000 deposit into her account.
The Bank presented a symbolic cheque to Miss Daasibi, a Level 400 Environment and Public Health student, at a ceremony held at the University’s Council Chamber.
The event was attended by Professor Eric Nyarko-Sampson, Vice-Chancellor of UESD; Mrs Mary Abena Agyepong, Registrar; management, staff and students of the University; and a delegation from GCB led by Mr Francis Nyarko, the Tema Zonal Manager.
Miss Daasibi recounted that in April this year, she received a mobile alert indicating that GH¢6,000 had been credited to her account without explanation.
After waiting 48 hours without any reversal, she reported the transaction to the Somanya Branch of GCB Bank PLC, leading to the successful recovery of the funds.
She said she heard nothing further about the matter until a colleague shared the incident on Facebook and appealed to the bank to recognise her honesty.
The social media post attracted the bank’s attention and culminated in the cash reward and formal recognition.
Miss Daasibi attributed her decision to return the money to the University’s core values, captured in the acronym HOPE – Honesty, Opportunity, Perseverance and Enterprising.
She expressed gratitude to GCB for the recognition and commended the University’s management for instilling values that promote responsible citizenship.
Miss Daasibi also urged fellow students to uphold honesty and integrity in all circumstances.
Professor Nyarko-Sampson commended her conduct, describing it as a reflection of UESD’s commitment to producing graduates with strong moral values alongside academic excellence.
He recalled a separate incident in which a lost wallet belonging to a member of the University community was returned with its contents intact.
According to him, such actions demonstrate that the institution’s values are being practised beyond the classroom.
Mr Francis Nyarko, the Tema Zonal Manager of GCB Bank, explained that the Bank considered it important to publicly recognise such exemplary conduct to encourage honesty and provide society with positive role models.
He announced that, in addition to the cash reward, Miss Daasibi had been appointed a GCB Bank PLC Ambassador and offered the opportunity to undertake her mandatory National Service with the Bank.
Other speakers, including Deans, the Head of the Department of Environment and Public Health and the Students’ Representative Council President, praised Miss Daasibi for her humility, integrity and sense of responsibility.
