South Africa’s entertainment industry is in mourning after the death of veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi, who passed away on the evening of Tuesday, 15 July 2026.

His family confirmed the news in an official media statement, revealing that he died following complications related to diabetes. He was 65.

The Sebogodi family requested privacy during this period of grief, while acknowledging the widespread love their late relative commanded.

“His legacy will live on through his remarkable body of work and the many lives he touched,” the family said in the statement.

Who was Seputla Sebogodi?

Sebogodi was one of the most recognisable faces on South African screens, having appeared in a string of beloved productions over the decades.

Television audiences will remember him from long-running shows including Generations, Suburban Bliss, Bophelo ke Semphego, Redemption and Scandal, each role cementing his reputation as a performer of rare depth and consistency.

His reach extended well beyond the small screen. On stage, he was equally commanding, starring in productions such as Big Dada, Waiting for Godot, The Rivonia Trial, Once a Pirate and Mooi Street Moves.

That range, from television drama to serious theatrical work, set him apart as a complete artist in every sense.

Industry pays tribute

News of his passing spread rapidly across social media, with Actor Spaces among the first industry accounts to break the tribute.

The verified account shared a post on Instagram honouring his life, writing:
