A new mobile application designed to bring eye testing closer to communities has been launched with developers saying it could help reduce preventable blindness through early detection.

The app, EyeFocus, uses a smartphone’s front-facing camera and artificial intelligence to conduct basic vision screenings at home or in community settings. It was unveiled by AccessPlus Communication Limited to improve access to eye health services, especially in underserved and rural areas.

Presenters outlined three core diagnostic tools in the app. The first is Color Vision Assessment, which uses standard digital test plates with numbers and shapes for introductory screening.

The second is Visual Acuity Test. It checks how clearly a user can see objects at a distance. Instead of letters, users respond with directional buttons, removing literacy barriers. The app automatically scales the optotypes based on real-time distance, ensuring accuracy even with slight movement. Developers say this makes it ideal for mass screenings in remote Ghanaian communities.

The third is Visual Field Assessment, which measures peripheral vision. Users focus straight ahead while the app maps their field of view and tracks blind spots over time. This helps detect asymptomatic conditions like glaucoma, which damages vision from the edges inward without pain.

“Technology should not simply exist because it is possible, rather, it should exist because it makes life better for people,” said Kelvin Boateng, CEO of AccessPlus Communication Limited.

He said EyeFocus reaffirms their commitment to protecting sight. “We aspire to inspire more people to become aware of their eye health, embrace regular screening, and seek timely care from qualified professionals,” he stated. “Every screening is an opportunity, every referral is a chance to protect sight.”

Head of Network and Systems Security at the Ghana Health Service, Nicholas Aboagye, called the launch timely. He noted many eye conditions go undetected until they become severe.

“By making early vision screening available through mobile technology, EyeFocus can help individuals identify possible challenges and seek professional care early,” he said.

He added that the initiative aligns with the national goal of promoting preventive healthcare and using digital innovation to strengthen systems.

Dr. Caryn Agyeman Prempeh, La Dade Kotopon Municipal Health Director, said the app shows how technology can support preventive care.

“It encourages people to take charge and seek care before minor conditions become serious. Prevention is far better and less costly than cure,” she said.

Prof. Samuel Bert Boadi-Kusi of the School of Optometry and Vision Science said EyeFocus will support basic screening. “Early detection makes a profound difference in preventing avoidable blindness from glaucoma, cataract, and refractive errors,” he noted.

A pilot evaluation showed the app has “significant and comparable potential” to other tools and can help clinicians before referrals.
