FIFA to release $2.5m to Ghana ahead of 2026 World Cup — Kofi Adams

Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, says FIFA will give Ghana  2.5 million dollars to support the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as part of financial entitlements due to countries that qualify for the tournament.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, June 1, the Minister explained that FIFA provides participating countries with financial support once they qualify for the tournament, with part of the funds released ahead of the competition to support preparations.

He noted that the advance payment is intended to cover key activities such as training camps, friendly matches, player movements, and other logistical arrangements ahead of the tournament.

According to him, all funds disbursed would be properly accounted for by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), stressing the need for strict record-keeping and financial transparency.

“Of course it will be accounted for and that is one thing I haven’t hidden away from the FA, that every pesewa they are utilising they must make sure proper records are kept,” he said.

He added that additional financial rewards are released by FIFA as teams progress in the tournament, with earnings increasing at each stage from the Round of 32 through to the final.

The Minister expressed hope that Ghana would advance far in the competition, noting that deeper progression would significantly increase the country’s financial returns.

On team preparations, he said the Black Stars will travel with a 26-man squad, with the final list yet to be confirmed by the technical team.

He also confirmed that government has maintained existing player allowances, including appearance fees and per diem payments, saying there will be no increase or reduction compared to previous tournaments.

“We are keeping to the very conditions that they have operated in since I think 2014. The appearance fee remains the same. The per diem remains the same,” he said.

Minister Adams added that any future adjustments to player benefits would require broader consultations and agreement between stakeholders to ensure clarity and fairness.
