The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has denied a publication alleging that the central bank is considering selling its new modern headquarters in Accra, describing the report as false and misleading.

In a press release dated Tuesday, 2nd June 2026, the Bank responded to a report published on June 1, 2026, titled “Bank of Ghana considering sale of new $260m headquarters – sources.”

The Bank of Ghana stated that it is not considering, discussing, or planning the sale of its new headquarters. The facility, known as The Bank Square, was commissioned to support the Bank’s operations and enhance efficiency in the discharge of its statutory mandate, and remains a critical asset of the Bank.

“We urge the public and the media to disregard this publication. Unverified reports of this nature have the potential to undermine public confidence in Ghana’s financial system and create unnecessary market uncertainty,” the central bank said in the statement issued by its Communications Department.

The Bank of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and stated that it will continue to engage stakeholders through its official channels. All official communication from the Bank is issued via the Bank’s website at bog.gov.gh, verified social media handles, press statements from the Communications Department, and signed statements from the Secretary of the Bank.

The central bank also encouraged the media to seek clarification from the Bank before publishing information relating to its operations.

The report had claimed, citing sources within the central bank, that the current management backed by the government was pursuing a “sale and leaseback” arrangement for The Bank Square. The report alleged that serious discussions had taken place and that the Bank needed to shore up its balance sheet following recent operational losses.

The report also claimed that some board directors opposed the proposal while influential proponents backed by strong elements within the government insisted the sale must go ahead.

The Bank Square, a multi-purpose complex, replaced the central bank’s sixty-nine-year-old previous headquarters. Construction began in 2019 under the previous administration and was commissioned by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in November 2024. The Bank officially relocated operations to The Bank Square in September 2025.

The 150,000-square-metre complex comprises seven structures, including The Tower, which stands at 100 metres with twenty-two floors and is Ghana’s tallest building.

In its press release, the Bank of Ghana urged the public and the media to disregard the publication and reiterated that all official communication would be disseminated through its verified channels.
