The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has dismissed reports suggesting it is considering the sale of its newly constructed headquarters in Accra, describing the publication as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the central bank responded to a report published a day earlier under the headline, “Bank of Ghana considering sale of new $260m headquarters – sources.”
According to the Bank, it is neither considering nor discussing the sale of its new headquarters, known as The Bank Square. It stressed that the facility was built to support its operations and improve efficiency in carrying out its statutory mandate and remains an important asset of the institution.
“The Bank of Ghana is not considering, discussing or planning the sale of its new headquarters,” the statement emphasised.
The Bank warned that unverified reports of this nature could undermine public confidence in the country’s financial system and create unnecessary uncertainty in the market.
“We urge the public and the media to disregard this publication. Unverified reports of this nature have the potential to undermine public confidence in Ghana’s financial system and create unnecessary market uncertainty,” the statement issued by the Bank’s Communications Department said.
The central bank reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and noted that all official communication is disseminated through its website, verified social media platforms, press releases from the Communications Department and signed statements from the Secretary of the Bank.
It also encouraged media organisations to seek clarification from the institution before publishing reports concerning its operations.
The publication in question alleged, citing unnamed sources within the Bank, that management, with government backing, was pursuing a sale and leaseback arrangement involving The Bank Square. It further claimed that discussions on the proposal had advanced and were intended to strengthen the Bank’s balance sheet following recent operational losses.
The report also suggested that while some members of the Board opposed the proposal, others with strong government backing were pushing for the transaction to proceed.
The Bank Square was constructed to replace the Bank of Ghana’s former headquarters, which had served the institution for 69 years. Construction of the facility began in 2019 and it was commissioned in November 2024 by former President Nana Akufo Addo. The Bank officially moved its operations to the complex in September 2025.
The 150,000 square metre development comprises seven structures, including The Tower, a 22 floor building standing 100 metres tall and recognised as the tallest building in Ghana.
Reiterating its position, the Bank of Ghana urged the public and the media to disregard the publication and rely only on information issued through its verified communication channels.
