Samuel Ackon, GNA

Assin Odumase (C/R), May 28, GNA- The Assin Odumase Restoration Child and Youth Development (AORCYD) in collaboration with Compassion International, has commissioned an ultra-modern washroom facility.

The facility s valued at GH¢230,000.00 for the people of Assin Odumase in the Assin South District of the Central Region.

It has a 10-seater water closet toilet and two bathrooms.

Speaking at the commissioning, Rev John Evans Arthur, a Minister at the Abura Dunkwa Assemblies of God Church, said the provision of the washroom was to foster community engagement as they were expected to come together to maintain it.

He therefore called on the members of the community as well as local leaders to take ownership and handle the facility with care.

According to the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, approximately 4.2 billion people worldwide lacked access to safely managed sanitation.

In Ghana, nearly 20 per cent of households do not have access to basic toilet facilities, contributing to the upsurge of preventable diseases, reduced productivity and compromised dignity.

Rev Arthur was confident that the facility would go a long way to help deal with open defecation.

Mr Isaac Nartey, the Project Facilitator of AORCYD, said it was critical to construct the place of convenience for the community in order to maintain high level of sanity and hygiene.

He told them to handle the facility with the needed attention it deserved.

Mr Theophilus Assumang Amoako, Assembly man for the Odumasi-Sibinso Electoral Area, advised users of the facility not to smoke there, and be ready to pay something little to maintain the place.

The official commissioning brought together Nananom, (traditional Chiefs and Elders) teachers, opinion leaders, the clergy and students.
