Queiroz names 28-Man Ghana squad for World Cup camp and Wales friendly

The Black Stars head coach assembles his largest squad yet as Ghana open camp in Cardiff ahead of the June 2nd friendly against Wales — their final match before the World Cup

Carlos Queiroz has named a 28-man squad for Ghana’s World Cup preparation camp and the international friendly against Wales in Cardiff on June 2nd.

The squad, comprising five goalkeepers, nine defenders, seven midfielders, and seven forwards, is expected to begin assembling in Cardiff from Monday, May 25th.

Players like Jordan Ayew, Gideon Mensah, Alidu Seidu, Fatawu Issahaku, and Benjamin Asare have already begun training at Dragon Park as preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup move into their final and most critical phase.

The announcement brings with it several notable storylines, with the headline inclusion being the return of Abdul Baba Rahman.

The Greece-based left-back, who has been absent from the Black Stars setup since September 2023, has earned his recall following a consistently impressive season for PAOK in the Greek Super League.

Two other significant returnees carry their own compelling narratives. Ernest Nuamah, the Olympique Lyon winger who suffered an ACL injury that kept him sidelined for more than 12 months and missed 54 matches for club and country, has been included following confirmation that he is back to full fitness.

Rayo Vallecano centre-back Abdul Mumin also returns after his own long road back from an ACL injury that ruled him out for 13 months. The 27-year-old made his comeback from the bench in Rayo’s 1-0 win over Espanyol in April.

The recurring theme extends throughout the squad. Saint-Etienne midfielder Augustine Boakye, who was in the Mexico friendly squad last month but couldn’t honour the call-up, is included alongside Stade Rennes defender Alidu Seidu.

Ajax Amsterdam youngster Paul Reverson has also been retained in the squad. The 20-year-old goalkeeper was first called up for the Mexico friendly and has been included again, but this time with a “long-term view” in mind.

The Wales friendly on June 2nd is Ghana’s penultimate match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Ghana expected to face one more country in the USA.

Ghana are expected to name their final 26-man squad on June 1st and open their 2026 World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17th at BMO Field in Toronto, before facing England in Boston on June 23rd and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27th.
