2027 AFCON: CAF may switch host to South Africa

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly considering relocating the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 to South Africa due to concerns over the preparedness of the original host nations.

The tournament had earlier been awarded to a joint bid by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, a decision that was set to make history as the first time East African nations would co-host the competition.

However, reports indicated that preparations across the three countries are lagging behind schedule, with major infrastructure projects such as stadium renovations, transport systems, and accommodation facilities progressing slower than anticipated.

In response, South Africa has been identified as a viable backup option, given its strong reputation for hosting major international tournaments, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Discussions within CAF are said to be ongoing, with a final decision expected in the coming months. If approved, the move would mark a major change to the hosting arrangement and could deal a setback to East Africa’s bid to stage the continental showpiece.
