Most Rev. Prof. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu

The headline for today’s leader is an extraction from the rather poignant and appropriate reaction of the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu to the indisputable U-turn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government on the LGBTQI+ quagmire.

A powerful reference to the new stance of the government on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, the clergyman’s reaction is coming on the heels of disturbing and image-denting silence on the part of pastors who championed the cause of the anti-gay protest prior to the last general election in the country.

Their inability to ignore the glitters of the ephemeral world by accepting silencing appointments has opened them up for public opprobrium.

Earlier, we had written that they could be preparing to react after regaining their conscience which they appeared to have lost in the frenzy of their political biasness of 2024.

Unable to use the same stick they used against the previous government when in their estimation at the time there was a deliberate attempt not to sign the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, their embarrassment and lost face is public knowledge.

With the Methodist clergyman and a few others sticking their heads above the parapet and taking the government to the cleaners, we can heave a sigh of relief that all is not lost; there are a few clergymen standing as it were, ready to defend the word of God.

For the sake of these spiritually exalted personalities, the Almighty would be merciful to us and spare us a Sodom and Gomorrah grade retribution.

As for the hypocrites whose inactions is offering impetus to the cause of LGBTQI+, the wrath of God awaits them.

The Presiding Bishop’s concerns resonate with most Ghanaians because as a people who are mostly faith-inclined, LGBTQI+ is a taboo, an abomination, contrary to the Government Spokesperson’s position.

We consider Felix Kwakye Ofosu’s description of the subject as a non-serious one as indeed insulting to the intelligence of his compatriots, as observed by the Presiding Bishop.

Nothing has changed in terms of the living conditions of Ghanaians since last year, and so as continuously pointed out, LGBTQI+ remains a subject of concern to the people of this country as it did earlier.

The subject was bandied around at the time the current government appointees were in opposition as a propaganda subject, because they appreciated its importance in the Ghanaian society.

That today it is no longer so, is indicative of the fact that it was used as a ruse just so Ghanaians would vote them into power; that is what propaganda stands for, using disinformation and misinformation to achieve a political end.

Governance is about moral integrity by those elected by the people to lead them and to take decisions on their behalf.

It is appalling that we have a government in place which won political power through deception, a moral flaw whose spiritual implications are as varied as they are unstoppable.

It is not too late for those pastors who campaigned for the ruling NDC using the subject under review, to apologise over the demotion of the subject to a non-issue.

They should disregard the appointments bestowed upon them and do the needful by demanding of the government a declaration of its stance on homosexuality.

Until they do so, they should exit the pulpit because they cannot hold themselves as men of God. God cannot be mocked. Those who dare shall taste His wrath today or tomorrow.
