Reopening the Charmain Speirs Case

In March 2015, Ghana was thrust into the international spotlight when the lifeless body of Charmain Speirs, a 41‑year‑old pregnant Scottish woman, was discovered in the bathtub of a hotel in Koforidua. She had traveled with her husband, Pastor Eric Isaiah Adusah, who left the hotel two days earlier, instructing staff not to disturb her. When her body was eventually found, the circumstances were suspicious, yet the official narrative quickly pointed to heroin poisoning.

This explanation was met with disbelief. Charmain’s family, led by her mother Linda Speirs, has consistently rejected the claim, insisting she had no history of drug use. To them, the inquest’s conclusion was not only implausible but a convenient cover‑up—a way to close the file without confronting uncomfortable truths. The arrest and subsequent release of Pastor Adusah only deepened suspicions that powerful interests were at play, shielding accountability and silencing justice.

Who is Pastor Eric Adusah?
Eric Isaiah Adusah was, at the time, a 28‑year‑old Ghanaian pastor based in the UK, leading Global Light Revival Ministries in London, with branches in Edinburgh and Manchester. His arrest shocked both Ghanaian and British Christian communities. Charged with murder under Ghana’s Criminal Code, he was remanded but later discharged in October 2015 after the Attorney‑General ruled there was insufficient evidence. His release left lingering doubts, with many questioning whether justice had been compromised.

The Cover‑Up and Its Consequences
The attempt to frame Charmain’s death as self‑inflicted through drug use was not only a distortion of her character but an insult to her memory. It reflects a troubling pattern: when foreign nationals die under suspicious circumstances, investigations are too often rushed, compromised, or quietly buried. Such practices erode public trust and tarnish Ghana’s reputation as a nation committed to fairness and truth.

A Direct Appeal to the Inspector‑General of Police

Today, under the leadership of Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Ghana Police Service has an opportunity to correct this injustice. Reopening the investigation into Charmain Speirs’ death would send a clear message: Ghana does not tolerate cover‑ups, and no case is too old or too inconvenient to revisit. It would demonstrate that the Police Service stands for integrity, accountability, and the protection of all lives—Ghanaian and foreign alike.

Reference to Modern Ghana Writings

In my writings on Modern Ghana, I have consistently warned of the corrosive effect unresolved cases have on public trust. The Speirs case is emblematic of how silence and convenience can be weaponized against justice. It is time for words to become action, and for Ghana’s institutions to prove that truth cannot be buried.

PRESS RELEASE: CALL FOR JUSTICE IN THE CHARMAN SPEIRS CASE

We, senior citizens of the Republic of Ghana, join the Speirs family in demanding a fresh investigation into the suspicious death of Charmain Speirs in Koforidua. We urge the Inspector‑General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to reopen the case without delay.

We further invite BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, and other international media to lend their investigative strength to this matter. Global scrutiny is essential to ensure that truth is not buried under silence and that Ghana’s institutions are held to the highest standards of accountability.

Justice delayed must not become justice denied. Ghana must act now.

Justice Must Speak
Justice delayed is justice denied, but justice demanded can still be justice delivered. The Speirs family deserves clarity, and Ghana deserves to show the world that its institutions will not allow truth to be buried under convenience. Reopening this case is not only about one woman’s tragic death—it is about restoring faith in the rule of law and proving that Ghana’s conscience remains alive.
