My Father Locked Me Up For Six Months – Eucharia Anunobi Reveals Childhood Struggles

Nollywood actress Eucharia Anunobi has spoken about the painful experiences she went through while growing up, including the strong opposition she faced from her father before she became famous.

Naija News reports that the actress shared the story during an interview on the Honest Bunch podcast, where she talked about the struggles she faced while trying to pursue education and a career path she believed in.

According to her, her father did not believe in educating a girl child because he felt girls would eventually get married and leave their families.

Because of this belief, she said he refused to support her education even though he had the financial ability to do so.

Anunobi explained that the disagreement between them became worse when she refused to follow the career path her father wanted for her.

She said her father preferred that she take up an office job and even brought home employment forms for her to complete.

The actress said she refused to fill out the forms because she did not want the job. She insisted on choosing her own path, a decision that angered her father.

She recalled a painful period when her father locked her inside a room for six months because she would not complete the employment forms.

According to her, the forms were pushed under the door while she remained locked in the room, but she still refused to sign them.

She said: “My father locked me up in my room for six months because I refused to fill out employment forms he wanted me to submit for an office job. He passed the forms under the door after locking me in the room and insisted I complete them. I still refused to sign it.

“He did not support my education. He didn’t pay my school fees. What is even a girl child? After all, they’re going to get married. He unofficially disowned me and did not approve of my acting career. I had to sneak out of the house and sometimes jump the fence to attend auditions. Modelling became my means of financing my education and supporting my studies.

“Winning my first award in London for the film Glamour Girls was a turning point for me. When I returned home with the award and presented it to my father, our relationship improved. After seeing my achievement, my father blessed me when I returned home.”
