Mahama to name ship at Hyundai Heavy Industries during South Korea visit

Mahama will travel to South Korea from March 10 to March 14, where he is expected to attend a ship-naming ceremony at the Ulsan shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The South Korean company is one of the world’s biggest shipbuilders and produces some of the largest cargo ships, oil tankers and offshore vessels used in global trade and energy transport.

Ship-naming ceremonies are a long-standing maritime tradition held before a vessel begins operations.

The event formally introduces the ship and symbolises good fortune and safe voyages. Such ceremonies often involve senior political leaders or representatives of the ship’s owner.

Hyundai’s shipyard in Ulsan is the largest shipbuilding complex in the world. The facility builds vessels for global shipping companies, oil producers and energy operators, making it a key hub in the international maritime industry.

Beyond the ceremony, Mahama’s visit is expected to focus on strengthening trade and investment ties between Ghana and South Korea.

The Ghanaian leader is scheduled to hold talks with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and meet the Speaker of the Korean National Assembly, Woo Won-shik.

Mahama will also deliver a speech at a conferment ceremony at Yonsei University and meet Ghanaian students and professionals living in South Korea. A dinner meeting with business leaders and chief executives is also planned as part of efforts to promote investment opportunities in Ghana.

The visit reflects Ghana’s push to deepen economic partnerships with Asian industrial economies as it seeks investment in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, manufacturing and maritime services.
