GoldBod Jewellery Limited, the jewellery subsidiary of the Ghana Gold Board, has clarified that it did not contribute funds toward the organisation of the Women of Valour event held in London over the weekend.
The event, Women of Valour, was created by multiple award-winning Ghanaian broadcast journalist Nana Aba Anamoah.
It is organised every March 7 to recognise women with inspiring stories of courage as the world marks International Women’s Day.
The aftermath of this year’s edition sparked backlash on social media following claims that the state-owned jewellery company had financed the programme.
Some supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) criticised the company online, arguing that it should not sponsor an event organised by a personality they believe had been critical of the party while it was in opposition.
However, in a statement issued on Sunday, March 8, GoldBod Jewellery said its role in the programme was limited to offering promotional discounts on its products to participants.
“GoldBod Jewellery Limited is listed as one of the partners of this year’s Women of Valour event because the company offered discounts on jewellery purchases to participants of the programme as part of our ongoing Ghana Heritage Month promotions, similar to our Valentine’s Month discounts,” the statement said.
The company stressed that the arrangement did not involve any financial support for the organisation of the event.
“The company did not contribute funds toward the organisation of the event,” it added.
GoldBod Jewellery further noted that its core focus remains the production and sale of locally made jewellery for customers in Ghana and abroad.
“At GoldBod Jewellery, we focus on manufacturing and retailing timeless pieces of made-in-Ghana jewellery for our valued customers in Ghana and abroad,” the company stated.
