Improper storage of petrol has been identified as the cause of a fire that severely damaged a five-bedroom house at Ekumfi Esikumah in the Central Region.

The incident, which occurred on February 26, 2026, destroyed large portions of the house, including a kitchen, provision store, and several personal belongings.

According to an adomonline.com report on March 1, 2026, firefighters from the Mankessim Fire Station responded swiftly after receiving a distress call and managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire started when petrol stored in the house ignited after coming into contact with a heat source,” the report said.

Despite the extent of destruction, firefighters were able to salvage one bedroom and some of its contents.

No injuries or fatalities were recorded.

The timely intervention of the fire service is credited with preventing further destruction and protecting adjoining properties in the community.

Authorities are expected to intensify public education on the safe handling and storage of flammable substances such as petrol to prevent similar incidents.
